So as I was on Twitter I came across the hashtag #renewdocmcstuffins. What?! Are we questioning CANCELLING this show?
My two year old is OBSESSED to say the least! Not only is Doc the theme for her room, she runs around the house giving everyone a checkup and making sure they are okay. Doc McStuffins supports her love for people and the things around her, something child development experts say children her age aren’t supposed to know how to do. Toddlers are considered egocentric. Their thoughts and communications are typically about themselves.
Egocentrism refers to the child’s inability to see a situation from another person’s point of view. But I know that’s not true because how could a child learn that another person is hurt unless they then understand they have a responsibility to help and to do so with love.
Yes, mothers all over the world are teaching their children these essential qualities, but to see a show and to know of a beloved Disney character who shares the same sentiment is amazing! Not to mention that this family is African American with a two parent household, with a family who shows the world a positive family life. This association alone speaks volumes to me a viewer and to the media I want my children exposed to.
Children believe what they receive and this show lets her believe she is a doctor, a caretaker, and a companion. She asked me for Doc McStuffins braids the other day when I was brushing her hair. Like, cmon! She loves this character. She sees herself in this character. Why take away someone who is such a wonderful role model?
My daughter also takes better care of her toys because she believes they will have to go to the “Big Book of Booboos” if she doesn’t. Seeing her coming over to me and say “Mama are you okay? You hurt?” if I stub my toe on something or if she sees me cry she gives a cuddle like Lambie.
Disney Junior/Disney shouldn’t even be questioning whether or not to renew this show. They should be focused on what more they can cover on these episodes? What other types of exposure will they create with the power platform they have to influence young children? What more products can be created to support the themes of the show?
Question: If you could share with Disney reasons for not cancelling this show, what would you share?
